Microsimulation Shows That Higher Prices for Beer and Spirits Can Reduce Drinking Among High-Risk Groups

Alcohol taxes are widely used around the world as a tool to reduce alcohol consumption and associated harms, yet most U.S. states have not raised alcohol excise taxes since 1991. This means that alcohol has become increasingly affordable in real terms, particularly beer and spirits, which are the preferred beverages among men, individuals with low education, and heavy drinkers. A new study using microsimulation has found that raising the prices of beer and spirits can significantly reduce alcohol consumption among these groups.
