The Hidden Metabolic Story Behind Vision-Saving Treatment

Macular edema (ME), a leading cause of central vision loss, is often treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. While anti-VEGF injections are widely used, the biochemical changes they trigger in the eye remain poorly understood. In a new metabolomics study, researchers traced the biochemical shifts in aqueous humor samples from ME patients before and after therapy. They uncovered 145 significantly altered metabolites, reshaping pathways in amino acid, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism. Distinct metabolic "signatures" emerged for each ME subtype, alongside shared changes across all patients, offering new possibilities for precision diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and uncovering hidden mechanisms of visual recovery.
