How Frequently Young Adults Use Cannabis May Predict Their Binge Drinking, Suggesting Opportunities for Preventing the Development of Alcohol Use Disorder

Changing cannabis use frequency may predict changes in binge drinking frequency among young adults, according to a new study that illuminates shifts in substance use across early adulthood. The findings imply opportunities for targeted interventions to prevent and treat binge drinking, a behavior linked to a range of negative consequences, including alcohol use disorder (AUD) and high economic costs. More frequent cannabis use during these years is associated with dangerous drinking outcomes. These include binge drinking (4+ drinks on one occasion for women, 5+ for men), which tends to peak during emerging adulthood. Most research involving young people who use both substances focuses on alcohol use broadly rather than binge drinking specifically.
