A Hidden Switch in Artery Cells Fuels Plaque Instability in Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is driven not only by lipid accumulation but also by dynamic changes in the cells that form the vessel wall. This study reveals that smooth muscle cells, long considered structural stabilizers of arterial plaques, can switch into a highly inflammatory, macrophage-like state that promotes plaque instability.
