Diet Quality Linked to Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer, with Anxiety and Depression Playing a Mediating Role

Poor dietary quality is a well known contributor to upper gastrointestinal cancer, but whether psychological distress amplifies this risk has remained unclear. Now, a large scale study involving nearly 30,000 adults from high risk regions of China has found that inadequate and unbalanced diets are associated not only with a higher likelihood of upper gastrointestinal cancer but also with more severe anxiety and depressive symptoms. Crucially, the analysis suggests that these psychological symptoms may partially explain--or mediate--the link between what people eat and their cancer risk, opening a new frontier for integrating mental health support into dietary cancer prevention strategies.
