Smart Gene Circuits Could Future-Proof Horticultural Crops

A research team has mapped a route toward horticultural crops that can withstand harsher climates without surrendering yield, flavor, color, or nutritional quality. The review connects the molecular systems plants use to survive cold, heat, drought, and salinity with emerging tools for redesigning those responses. It brings together transcriptional control, epigenetic stress memory, genome editing, synthetic gene circuits, multi-omics, and artificial intelligence-guided breeding. Rather than treating stress tolerance as a single-gene problem, the authors present resilience as a coordinated design challenge involving roots, metabolism, seasonal timing, antioxidant protection, and crop quality. The framework could help shift horticultural breeding from broad selection toward precise, environment-responsive crop improvement.
