Phyllanthus Urinaria L Extract Protects Mice Against Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury
An aqueous extract of Phyllanthus urinaria L (PU) reduced kidney injury, inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress in mice exposed to cisplatin, a widely used chemotherapy drug with dose-limiting nephrotoxicity. In a cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) model, PU treatment lowered blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr), preserved renal tubule structure and reduced neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). It also suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine genes, rebalanced apoptosis-related proteins and restored antioxidant defenses. The findings provide preclinical evidence that PU may protect renal tubular epithelial cells through multiple pathways and suggest that PU warrants further study as a potential nephroprotective strategy for cisplatin-treated patients, while emphasizing the need for clinical validation.
